چکیده

After 6 weeks of treatment with 17;6-estradiol, two distinct groups of female NZB/ NZW mice were identified. Group I females developed significant increases in serum f f 2 , pand y-globulins and had few serologic abnormalities. Serum globulins did not increase in Group I1 females. This blunted response correlated with a pretreatment increase in the frequency of positive tests for ANA, LE phenomena and cryoproteins in 4-week-old Group II mice.

Effects of altered prenatal hormonal environment on expression of autoimmune disease in NZB/NZW mice.

F1 hybrid New Zealand Black (NZB) x New Zealand White (NZM) (NZB/NZW) mice spontaneously develop an autoimmune disease analogous to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Testosterone experts a powerful suppressive effect on this disorder in adult NZB/NZW mice. A series of experiments was designed to determine if disease would also be suppressed by exposing fetal NZB/NZW mice to increased testoste...

Effect of castration and sex hormone treatment on survival, anti- nucleic acid antibodies, and glomerulonephritis in NZB/NZW F1 mice

NZB/NZW F1 mice of both sexes were castrated at 2 wk of age and implanted subcutaneously with silastic tubes containing either 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone or estradiol-17-beta. Mice receiving androgen showed improved survival, reduced anti-nucleic acid antibodies, or less evidence of glomerulonephritis as determined by light, immunofluorescent, and electron microscopy. By contrast, opposite eff...

Influence of natural and synthetic estrogens on the course of autoimmune disease in the NZB-NZW mouse.

Antinuclear antibodies were found in 64% of serum samples obtained from male NZB/NZW mice after 6 weeks of treatment with mestranol. Both female and male mice responded to this synthetic female hormone with marked elevations of serum “2’ and p-globulins; 7-globulins were not increased. There was no evidence that mestranol accelerated the develop ment of autoimmune renal disease in these animals...

COMPARISON OF THE IMMUNE RESPONSIVENESS OF NZB AND NZB x NZW F1 HYBRID MICE WITH THAT OF OTHER STRAINS OF MICE

The immune responsiveness of (NZB x NZW) F(1) hybrid mice (NZB/W) has been compared with that of three other strains of mice, A/J, BALB/c, and CBA/J. The antigens used included sheep red blood cells (SRBC), keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and human gamma-globulin (HGG). It was found that important strain differences existed in the amount of antibody produced, but th...

Acceleration of Autoimmunity by Organochlorine Pesticides in (NZB × NZW)F1 Mice

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder that affects women more frequently than men. In the (NZB times NZW)F1 mouse, a murine SLE model, the presence or absence of estrogen markedly influences the rate of progression of disease. Three organochlorine pesticides with estrogenic effects were administered chronically to ovariectomized female (NZB times NZW)F1 mice, and we measu...
